How Your Amalfi Coast Boat Tour Works

From a Sorrento pickup to Positano, Capri and back, in one unforgettable day.

  1. Sorrento Hotel Pickup

Most cruises start with a transfer or meeting point in Sorrento, the gateway to the coast. Step aboard your boat at the marina and meet your skipper.

  2. Cruise to Positano & Amalfi

Sail along the cliffs past Positano's tumbling pastel houses and the town of Amalfi, with grottoes, waterfalls and villas you can only see from the sea.

  3. Swim, Snorkel & Prosecco

Drop anchor in turquoise coves for swimming and snorkeling, with a chilled Prosecco and snacks on deck. Capri and the Blue Grotto are an option on many tours.

  4. Back to Sorrento

Cruise back as the cliffs glow gold in the afternoon light. A full, unhurried day on the water — and the best way to beat the coast road's traffic.

The Amalfi Coast by Boat: Private, Small-Group & Where They Go

Why the water beats the coast road, the Positano–Amalfi–Capri routes, private vs shared, and the best time to sail.

Luxury Amalfi Coast boat tour cruising past Positano's pastel cliffs near Sorrento, Italy
The Amalfi Coast from the water — Positano's pastel cliffs on a small-group cruise. Tap to check availability.

The Amalfi Coast was built to be seen from the sea. Its towns spill down the cliffs to the water; its grottoes, villas and hidden coves face the waves, not the road. And the road itself — the famous SS163 — is a slow, white-knuckle ribbon of hairpins that, in summer, can take hours to crawl between towns. A boat tour solves all of that at once, which is why a day on the water is the most luxurious way to do the coast.

Why the water beats the coast road

From a boat you see Positano the way it appears on every postcard — the whole pastel amphitheatre tumbling to the sea — plus the parts you’d never reach by car: sea caves, waterfalls, the Li Galli islands, and quiet swimming coves between the towns. You skip the traffic, the parking nightmares and the packed buses entirely. For a planning overview of the coast beyond the boat tours, our sister guide at amalficosta.tours covers the towns, beaches and day trips in depth.

The routes: Positano, Amalfi and Capri

Most cruises leave from Sorrento (the practical gateway) and follow one of two arcs:

  • The Amalfi Coast run — west to east past Positano and on toward Amalfi, hugging the cliffs with swim stops in coves along the way.
  • The Capri day — across the bay to the island of Capri, circling its sea stacks (the Faraglioni) with an optional visit to the Blue Grotto.

Some premium tours combine both. The options below span the classic Positano–Amalfi cruise and the exclusive Capri boat days.

Private vs small-group: which is the luxury?

  • A small-group boat tour is the sweet spot for most travelers — intimate, far more comfortable than the ferries, and excellent value for what you get (drinks, swim stops, snorkeling).
  • A private charter is the true luxury: your own boat and skipper, your own pace, the coves you choose, and the flexibility to time Positano for lunch or Capri for sunset. It’s the pick for couples, families and special occasions — and the only way to truly have the coast to yourselves.

When to sail

The season runs roughly April to October, with the warmest water and most reliable weather from June to September. July and August are glorious but busy and hot; late May, June and September offer the best balance of warm seas and thinner crowds. Mornings bring calmer water; afternoons bring golden light on the cliffs. Book well ahead in peak summer — the best small-group and private boats sell out weeks in advance.

"If you do anything on your trip to Sorrento/Amalfi coast area DO THIS!! This was our favorite day of our 3 week trip and we wish we could do it again! Our guides were Guido and Joseph and they were absolutely fantastic! The boat cruise was scenic and relaxing! We had plenty of time to do/see what we desire in both Amalfi and Positano. And the swimming stop at the end of the trip was absolutely breathtaking. The prosecco and limoncello were flowing at the end of the ride! You will need to pay 10€ per person in cash at beginning of trip/check in for destination “fee”. Also at the marina, the café on sight will solicit you to buy their lunch items/bottles of prosecco to take on the boat— this is NOT included in your ticket. I would wait to buy food until either of the stops, our guides had fantastic recommendations for food and things to see at each place!"

"Absolutely the most beautiful boat ride. Music was great, scenery beautiful. Quick stops in Positano and Almafi was all we needed. The guide/crew were very nice! Thank you Jonny (depp) and Toni (saprano) hehe :D"

"Wow! What a memorable trip -- so very convenient being picked up from our hotel in Sorrento and driven to the marina where our boat would take us on a day trip to Positano, Amalfi, and the scenic Amalfi coast along the way. The marina we departed from was a good 20 minutes drive from our hotel --definitely not within walking distance! Once we got to the marina, we were checked in, given a quick orientation, assigned to our crew for the trip, then escorted to our boat... this process took about 20 minutes or so. We paid the 5 euro per person "harbor fee", rented snorkeling equipment and towels, and then got settled on the boat -- our crew (Tony and Tony) were fun, helpful, knowledgeable, and took very good care of us for the entire trip. So very glad we chose to explore the Amalfi coast on a private boat charter, avoiding the lines and crowds I had seen on YouTube while evaluating the options for exploring the Amalfi Coast. Money well spent."
